Africanized bees are virtually identical in appearance to European honey bees — similar size, similar coloring, same basic body structure. The difference is genetic and behavioral, not visual.
This matters because it means you cannot decide whether a bee colony is safe based on how the bees look. In Clark County’s Africanized bee quarantine zone, every wild bee colony should be treated as potentially Africanized until a professional confirms otherwise.
What Makes Africanized Bees Different
Africanized honey bees are a hybrid of African honey bees introduced to Brazil in the 1950s and various European honey bee subspecies. The hybridization produced a bee with significantly altered defensive behavior:
Sensitivity to disturbance. Africanized colonies respond defensively to much smaller disturbances than European colonies. A lawnmower 50 feet away, a barking dog, or vibration from power tools near the hive entrance can trigger a defensive response.
Number of bees in the response. When Africanized colonies defend, they send a larger proportion of the colony as guard bees — thousands rather than hundreds.
Pursuit distance. Africanized bees will pursue perceived threats for 100 to 300 yards, compared to a few dozen yards for European honey bees.
Time to calm. After being disturbed, Africanized colonies remain defensive for 24 hours or more. European colonies typically calm within minutes.
Behavioral Signs of Possible Africanization
While you cannot visually identify Africanized bees, certain behavioral signs suggest a colony may be Africanized:
- Bees that respond defensively without obvious provocation
- Bees that follow you after you have moved away from the hive
- Colony response that involves very large numbers of bees
- Bees that continue pursuing after you have gone indoors
How Professionals Identify Africanized Bees
